I am proud to announce that I will be a featured artist for Windows of Understanding, a public art project rooted in social justice, opening to the public on Mon, January 18!
Featured in storefronts in New Brunswick and Highland Park, the project has expanded to Metuchen with art on display at the Metuchen Public Library. Artists paired with non-profit organizations interpret the question “How do we see through hate?” And transform local businesses into windows of understanding.

Based on the inspiration of a wide range of wire art created by Alexander Calder, and his love of “play”, we will create a small flat wire sculpture constructed in an aluminum circular frame on the theme of animals. After the basic design is completed, the students will embellish their works using mixed media such as cloth, beads or wire screen. In addition to demonstrating the basic techniques used in wire sculpture, we’ll learn a few interesting facts and stories about the artist Alexander Calder, including his special interest in the circus!
COMMUNITY VIEWING OPPORTUNITY: There is a possibility to take all the completed pieces and showcase them as a collection at a public viewing.
Tuesday, May 22 & Tuesday, May 29
4pm–6pm
Cost $40.00 for both Workshops (Must attend both!)

Explore gouache techniques (opaque watercolor - a flat medium with great color saturation and a reflective quality), commonly seen in magazine and children´s book illustrations, visual poetry and journaling. Participants are encouraged to experiment with this versatile and mostly unknown media which can be combined in endlessly fascinating ways with watercolor and acrylic under paintings, or using overlays of soft pastel, color pencils and pen & ink. For inspiration, students will look at the work of Paul Klee, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Sonia Delaunay and Ralph Parker. Projects will include illustrating text, self-authored or of special interest as well as landscape, still life and portrait studies. Participants will also explore the use of collage with gouache, currently celebrated by contemporary illustrators. Instructor Mickey Waring is currently Art Director and Art Teacher at the Westerhoff School of Music & Art. A graduate from Princeton University and Beirut University College, she has illustrated for magazines in the United States and abroad. Her work, which includes puppetry and jewelry design, is influenced by a lifetime of travel abroad in Europe and the Middle East. A member of the Metuchen Cultural Arts Commission and recently contributor to the Visual Arts Connection, Ms. Waring has been a driving force in the arts community of Metuchen over the past 22 years. Ms. Waring´s recent work includes illustrations and small works on paper in watercolor, acrylics, oil, and gouache.
